20 June 2016: Dr Zhang Xinpeng’s academic excellence is recognized at the national level

The academic excellence of Dr Zhang Xinpeng, assistant professor of IEAS, is recently recognized at both the national and provincial level in China. On 12 June 2016, the Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science of Zhejiang Province (浙江省哲学社会科学发展规划领导小组) granted approval for Dr Zhang’s research proposal “The Circulation and Influence of Tradtional Chinese Children’s Primers in East Asia” (中国传统童蒙读物在东亚的流播与影响研究) as a Zhijiang Youth Project (之江青年课题) at the provincial level.

Each year, the National Social Science Foundation of China offers a number of merit-based awards to distinguished academic researchers and considers outstanding proposals that address significant academic issues at the national level. Dr Zhang Xinpeng’s proposed research project, titled “The Study and Sorting of Children’s Primers Excavated at Dunhuang and Turpan (敦煌吐鲁番出土蒙书整理与研究)”, is also formally endorsed by the National Social Science Foundation of China on 17 June 2016 as a national project.

Dr Zhang Xinpeng of IEAS is particularly interested in the academic research on frescoes and art of Dunhuang and Turpan. His projects will not only advance understanding of the frescoes and art in this world-renowned area but also traditional Chinese children’s primers. Dr Zhang now combines his academic interest and excellence with the dedication to the advancement of understanding East Asia culturally.  Dr Zhang’s cutting-edge research projects explore how a seemingly small episode of children’s primers in Chinese history helps elucidate the cultural influence of China in East Asia.
