11 Janauary 2018: Professors of Ningbo University visited IEAS
On 5 January 2018, Dean Professor Zhang Wei and Professor Zheng Jiexi of Faculty of Liberal Arts and ommunication,Ningbo University visited IEAS and delivered guest lectures at Forum on East Asian Culture.

Dean Professor Zhang Wei is teaching on the courses of ancient Chinese history. His research interests include history of Song dynasty, eastern Zhejiang academic history and Zhejiang maritime culture. He delivered lecture on Neo-Confucianism and Chinese traditional culture. Neo-Confucianism is the main academic schism in the Song dynasty. The Song dynasty (979-1279) saw a reaction to the foreign religious culture and a creative revitalization of the stagnant Confucian tradition. In the political world this took the form of a reform movement which attempted to address the pressing socio-economic problems of the day by a creative reinterpretation of ancient ideal Confucian institutions. Neo-Confucians, such as Zhou Dunyi and Zhu Xi, recognized that the Confucian system of the time did not include a thoroughgoing metaphysical system, so they found it necessary to devise one for human dignity and moral integrity. In contrast to Buddhists and Daoists, neo-Confucians did not believe in an external world unconnected with the world of matter.Neo-Confucianism was not a rigid or doctrinaire religious-philosophical tradition. As such, its development is a far more organic affair, characterized by an ever-increasing body of sources and perspectives.

Professor Zheng Jiexi is teaching courses on East Asian history. His research interest is in history of Sino-foreign relations. With reference to previously untouched resources, he delivered guest lecture on the diplomatic peace negotiation during the Wanli Korean Battle (Imjin War 1592-1596). According to Professor Zheng, this war impacted three countries in East Asia, Joseon dynasty, Ming dynasty and Azuchi-Momoyama period Japan. Joseon's lands were devastated by 7 years war and a lot of national treasures were destroyed or plundered by Japanese.

Through the visit of Dean Professor Zhang Wei and Professor Zheng Jiexi, the academic co-operation and exchange between IEAS and Ningbo University are furthered.
