27 March 2017: Seminar of Dr Wang Guangsheng on Natsume Soseki

On 24 March 2017, Dr Wang Guangsheng held a seminar on Han Poem of Natsume Soseki at IEAS. Natsume Soseki, pseudonym of Natsume Kinnosuke ( 9 February 1867 - 9 December 1916) , is an outstanding foremost Japanese novelist of the Meiji period but he also wrote Han poem (Chinese-style poetry). Dr Wang taught faculty staffs and graduate students how to appreciate the rhythm between lines and between meanings all relate to beauty of the Han poem of Natsume Soseki. As far as his expression in Han poem goes, a poem has many ways of expressing. Dr Wang concisely introduced how rhythm, technique, uniqueness and expression are expressed in the Han poem of this Japanese novelist. His poem is also something which grabs us and gives us something about zen (Chen Buddhism) we might otherwise not experience through his literature. With his poem, beauty is expressed through Chinese characters.

All in all, the seminar of Dr Wang makes a fitting addition to our knowledge of this prominent Japanese novelist.
